The College Board has named fifty St. Michael students as "Advanced Placement Scholars" on the basis of their performance on the May, 2022 A.P. exams.
Of those:
- 27 were named "A.P. Scholars" (granted to students scoring "3" or higher on three exams)
- 5 were named "A.P. Scholars with Honor" (granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams),
- 18 were named "A.P. Scholars with Distinction" (granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
"Congratulations to these students," says Faustin Weber, the school principal. "As I look over these names, I see kids who have really sky-rocketed in their academic aspirations and achievements over the last 3-4 years, which is really satisfying. I'm happy for them, and happy for their parents, who may be able to save some dollars in college tuition costs, depending on how each college handles these scores. "
"Congrats also to our teachers--they've been trained by the College Board to teach these classes, and through their commitment to their students and their craft, they've done well, " Weber continues. "But it's more than just our A.P. teachers. In a small school like ours, it's likely that these kids have had every teacher in our school at least once, if not 2-3 times. We're blessed to have teachers who create an optimistic, encouraging culture for learning here, and our kids respond by working hard."
"One final note," says Weber. "77% of the students taking the A.P. exams at St. Michael scored a three or better this year, our highest percentage ever. But I want to also acknowledge the kids who enrolled in A.P. classes that may not have scored like they wanted to on these exams. I talk often to our students about having the courage to put themselves out there, to stretch, even if it means they're not successful 100% of the time. These kids have done that--they've taken tough classes when they could've chosen an easier path. I'm really proud of them, and I believe they'll be stronger for it."
The 50 Scholars for 2022 was nearly identical in number with the 49 Scholars from 2021. This year's group, however, had 18 students receiving the highest honor of "AP Scholar with Distinction" compared with 9 students last year. School enrollment for 2021--2022 was 350 students.
