Starting in early 2023, Coastal Alabama Community College's athletics department will welcome approximately 20 new cross-country athletes to its Brewton campus, marking the first time the sport has been represented at the college.
The new men's and women's cross-country teams will feature at least 10 athletes per team and be ready to compete when the Fall 2023 season opens.
"This (cross-country) is one of the fastest growing areas in community college athletics and we are excited about being a part of this movement," said Dennis Fuqua, Brewton campus director.
After the conclusion of the 2021 season, the Escambia County campus lost its men's basketball program, and the creation of the cross-country team will bring 20 new athletes to the campus, to counter the 15 who made up the basketball team. The administration will soon begin its search for a coach to head up the pilot program.
"The Brewton area has a strong tradition with cross-country and track and field, and we think we can be really competitive based on local recruiting, plus being able to go outside our area when we need to," said Coastal Alabama Community College Athletic Director Daniel Head. "This is going to bring an exciting new dynamic to our campus."
Head said scholarship opportunities will be available for athletes on both cross-country teams, and those details are being worked out as the search for a head coach begins.
"I want to be sure we get the right head coach to start this program," said Fuqua. "There will be a ton of community support, and this will be a very good situation for the person we select."
