The City of Gulf shores would like to share the recent update Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) provided on the Waterways Bridge project:
“The Alabama Department of Transportation is moving forward to build a new public bridge over the intracoastal Waterway in Baldwin County. The bridge, which will be owned by the people of Alabama, will absolutely help relieve traffic congestion for residents and visitors as well as provide an additional evacuation route.
The new bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway will:
- add extra capacity to relieve traffic congestion on Highway 59;
- provide new infrastructure that is critical to the continued growth and success of Baldwin County and Alabama’s tourism industry;
- provide another safe evacuation route off the island; and
- offer a faster alternative to get to the hospital in Foley.
The successful bidder, Scott Bridge Company, is headquartered in Opelika, Alabama. Their selection was determined through a public, competitive process and their bid was at the low end of ALDOT’s acceptable cost range for this project.
ALDOT hopes that this work will be completed as quickly as possible. Any delay will only exacerbate the traffic problems on the Gulf Coast.”
ALDOT anticipates initial work beginning in late October. The deadline for completion is January 1, 2026. The contract amount is $51.85 million, which is at the low end of the pre-bid estimate.
