Renew, Rejuvenate and Reconnect

The past several years have been a time of great stress, isolation and physical and mental exhaustion. As dental school leaders, most of us prioritized the wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff over our own needs during this time. Leading during such a significant period of uncertainty has taken its toll on many of us. Dental education is not immune from the “great resignation,” and deans and corporate leaders are looking for ways to reinvent themselves (either within their current roles or in new roles) and to support their teams in doing so as well.

The 2022 ADEA Deans’ Conference is an opportunity to Renew, Rejuvenate and Reconnect. We will hear from colleagues who have “reinvented” themselves multiple times within their careers and learn how they re-energize. We will learn from colleagues in other health professions about how leaders can take a systems-level approach to creating environments that optimize wellbeing for students, faculty, staff and administrators. We will explore the science of happiness and wellbeing with a leading researcher in the field. And we will work with a former dean of education who now works with higher education institutions to apply a coaching model to support renewal and rejuvenation, both for our teams and for ourselves.

Most importantly, we will have an opportunity to reconnect with and learn from each other. We know that the informal time during the ADEA Deans’ Conference is as important as the formal sessions, and we are providing ample time for you to reconnect and engage with your peers in both settings. We will also take the opportunity as our first in-person ADEA Deans’ Conference in three years to welcome our newest colleagues as they embark on their leadership journey in dental education.
