Orange Beach Senior Center November 2022 Newsletter and Calendar

The Orange Beach Adult/Senior Activity Center’s Shoreline News - Life Enriching Activities for the Adult 50 & Over

Can you believe it is nearing the end of the year and approaching the holiday season! The holidays can really be a stressful time of year for many people. As we age, changes in lifestyle and health can add stress and anxiety even more around this time of year. Symptoms of being over-stressed can vary from person to person, but it is important to not dismiss them as signs of “getting older” or that you just don’t like this time of year anymore. By recognizing when you or a friend or family member is becoming too stressed out, you can better manage and cope with it.  It is important to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health; and by finding simple, gentle activities you enjoy, you can help reduce your stress this season. Below are some tips to get started, but find something that will work for you, and of course talk to your doctor with any concerns or questions:

  • Breathe – Just taking a second to pause and take a deep breath, can slow the mind when you feel overwhelmed.
  • Talk about it – Talking about stressors with a friend, family or even a support group can help relieve stress even if it’s chatting over a cup of coffee!
  • Laugh – Laughter is an amazing stress reliever! Watch a funny movie or video or read a fun story that will make you laugh.
  • Focus on your senses – Listening to music, lighting a candle or aromatherapy, and petting a pet can help to relax, just be sure to create your soothing experience.
  • Exercise – Light exercise can get your mind off your stress for a bit, while helping to relieve it!
  • Fun Activities – Find fun little things you enjoy doing: board games, puzzles, coloring books, reading, the possibilities are endless!
